Fitzroy Townhouses
Melbourne, Victoria
Peter Searle Design created two spacious residential town residences.
Striking interiors maximise habitation and modern design aspects, articulating inner-city blended with privacy and individuality. Peter Searle Design interpreted the client’s needs coming in under budget and both townhouses each have very distinct and apparent personalities, whilst showing respect for the surrounding properties and the environment.
Initially in the design concept stage, the challenges to fulfil the clients brief on the extremely difficult small irregular site of 271 square metres seemed insurmountable.
Our project brief was to design not only one but two dwellings with a minimum of 20 square metres each. Also two car garaging per Townhouse. Some form of water feature, possibly even a pool! Also a rustic wow factor facade was desirable. The site difficulty therefore made an increase in height, the only viable option for the designer.
Numerous challenges arose from this design factor. Namely overcoming immediate neighbour overshadowing and overlooking, this was a paramount priority. Consideration was given to regulations for neighbouring boundaries. Noise control and Heritage Overlay in height and setbacks.
The project was achieved with the use of building heights and various materials utilised to highlight the architectural form and rustic facade.
Townhouse one has three bedrooms with an elevated north facing solar lap pool on the mid level. Townhouse two has four bedrooms.
Both have abundant daylight, ventilation, double glazed, soundproofed internal walls, and with innovative materials and textures, ensure both homes meet a five star rating. Although contemporary, both satisfy strict heritage controls. Clever inclusion of bi-fold and stackable sliding doors facilitates living and dining zones merging with all year outside entertaining, creating an expansive outdoor alfresco area.
