The brief was to rebuild a 1890s Victorian Terrace on a narrow 5 meter wide block with a Heritage overlay into a modern light filled contemporary home with office space. The result is a contemporary open luminous space that defies its narrow limitations.
The centre of the residence is opened up with a series of sliding glass panels that when open are fully concealed, providing a totally private sun drenched dining, living and outdoor entertaining hub. The new configuration of old and new proves an enriching experience. Bi-fold doors at the rear of the property open onto a deck that overlooks the in ground pool and creates truly an inner city oasis.
The house uses simple sculptural forms and maximizes the connection to outdoors. Polished concrete floors and luxury fixtures and fittings make this home a comfortable and inviting space to both live and work.
"I now love coming home. It’s a place of light that allows me to enjoy all the seasons Melbourne has to offer in comfort. I can curl up in front of the gas log fire place in winter and watch the thunder clouds roll by, or throw open the doors in summer and bring the outdoors right into the living space. The various textures of wood and stone Peter has used and the way he has brought light into every room is a constant joy." V. Laing.
